Expedited Airport Screening

Security screening at airports can be stressful and take a lot of time. If you travel regularly, the hours stuck in security screening add up.

If you are looking for a faster route through the security process check out expedited security screening services such as TSA PreCheck, Global Entry, Nexus, Sentri or a privately operated service like CLEAR Plus.

All programs charge a fee, however each can also be obtained for free in the form of statement credits offered with premium credit cards, or in the case of CLEAR Plus, free for Delta Diamond Medallion, United 1K, and United Global Services members, and at a reduced cost for other elite tiers.

An expedited security service is the fastest way through airport identity and the security screening processes. It is a way to skip the TSA security lines using a streamlined identity verification process.  You will get a fast-track through the security screening process. The programs range in price and benefits and can have overlapping benefits.

There are five expedited security screening programs operating in the U.S. with fees ranging from $50 to $189:

  • TSA PreCheck: Allows low-risk travelers who are eligible to make use of expedited security screening.  It is available at participating U.S. airports and for the majority of international itineraries. TSA PreCheck members aren’t required to remove belts, shoes, or jackets and can leave liquids and laptops in carry-on luggage. TSA PreCheck costs $78 for five years.

  • Global Entry: Automated Global Entry kiosks are available at select airports offering expedited clearance for pre-approved, low-risk travelers upon arrival in the United States. A $100 one-time fee is required for the Global Entry application. Membership is valid for five years and requires an interview at an approved center.

  • NEXUS: A bilateral program for U.S. and Canadian travelers, NEXUS members use kiosks located at border crossings, airports (Global Entry kiosks when entering the U.S.), and also at marine reporting locations. NEXUS costs $50 on both sides of the border.

Nexus airport screening, expedited Canada screening

  • SENTRI: Similar to the NEXUS program but for the U.S.-Mexico border and only applies to land border entry locations. SENTRI is not a bilateral program and only applies to travelers re-entering the U.S., not on the way into Mexico. SENTRI costs $122.25 per person.

  • CLEAR PlusThis is a privately operated program and CLEAR Plus doesn’t have quite the same footprint as the government programs. It takes expedited security a step further using biometric identification to speed up the security process. CLEAR Plus members are then bumped to the front of the security check lines. CLEAR Plus is the most expensive program at $189 per year.
