Bella Italia by Sea: My Windstar Wind Surf Journey from Rome to Venice
There are trips you take, and then there are trips you experience.
My recent journey aboard Windstar Cruises’s Wind Surf was definitely the latter.
For nine days, I sailed from Rome to Venice on Bella Italia: A Southern Italian Romance—a voyage that combined some of Italy’s most captivating destinations with the relaxed, intimate experience that makes Windstar so different from traditional cruising.
A Different Way to Experience Italy 🇮🇹
I have traveled throughout Italy, but seeing the country from the water offers an entirely different perspective.
Instead of unpacking and repacking every few days, Wind Surf became my home while Italy came to me.
And that is one of the things I loved most about this sailing.
The Wind Surf carries far fewer guests than today’s massive cruise ships, creating an atmosphere that feels more like a private yacht than a traditional cruise ship. There is a wonderful sense of intimacy onboard, and the crew quickly begins to recognize you.
There are no endless crowds, no overwhelming lines, and no feeling that you are simply one passenger among thousands.
Instead, there is time to slow down, enjoy a meal, watch the coastline drift by and truly savor the journey. ⛵️🌊
From Rome to Southern Italy 🇮🇹
The journey began in Rome, one of the world’s great cities.
Rome is the perfect place to begin an Italian adventure because there is simply so much to see and do—from the Colosseum and Roman Forum to the Vatican, Trevi Fountain and charming neighborhoods filled with trattorias and cafés.
But after exploring Rome, it was time to head to the coast and begin the sailing portion of the journey.
And this is where the magic really began.
Small Ship. Big Experiences. ✨
One of the biggest advantages of sailing on Wind Surf is where a smaller ship can take you.
Rather than focusing exclusively on the largest and most famous ports, Windstar can visit smaller destinations where you can experience more of the local character and culture.
That means wandering through charming streets, enjoying a leisurely lunch at a local restaurant, discovering a family-owned shop or simply sitting in a piazza watching Italian life unfold around you.
For me, that is what experiential travel is all about.
It isn’t just about seeing Italy. It’s about experiencing Italy.
Life Onboard Wind Surf ⛵️
Wind Surf itself is part of the experience.
There is something undeniably special about watching the sails go up and feeling the ship begin to glide across the Mediterranean.
And when the sails are raised, the experience becomes even more memorable.
Imagine sitting on deck, feeling the Mediterranean breeze, watching the coastline disappear behind you and knowing that you don’t have anywhere you need to be for a while.
That is the Windstar feeling.
The pace is relaxed. The atmosphere is casual but refined. And the focus is on the destination, the experience and the journey itself.
The Food 🍝🍋
Of course, you can’t sail through Italy without talking about food!
From fresh seafood and pasta to regional specialties and beautifully prepared dishes, food was an important part of the experience.
But what I particularly appreciated was the emphasis on destination-focused dining.
Traveling through Italy gives you the opportunity to experience how different regions have their own culinary traditions, ingredients and flavors.
And there is something wonderful about ending a day ashore with a delicious Italian meal and then returning to your ship knowing that your hotel room is waiting for you. 🍷🍝
And Then There Was Venice… ❤️
After sailing through Southern Italy and along the Adriatic, the journey eventually brought us to Venice.
Arriving in Venice by water feels like the perfect ending to an Italian sailing adventure.
There is something magical about approaching Venice from the sea and seeing the domes, campaniles and historic buildings rise from the lagoon.
And once again, the smaller size of Wind Surf makes a difference.
This isn’t simply about getting from one port to another. It’s about how you arrive.
Why I Love Experiencing a Cruise Before Recommending It to My Clients 💙
As a travel advisor, I can read brochures, study itineraries and attend training sessions.
But there is no substitute for actually being there.
Now, when a client asks me about Windstar, I can tell them what it is really like to sail on Wind Surf.
I can talk about the atmosphere onboard.
I can explain what makes the ship different from a large ocean liner.
I can share my impressions of the service, dining and onboard experience.
And most importantly, I can help determine whether Windstar is the right cruise line for them.
Because not every cruise line is right for every traveler.
That is where the value of working with an experienced travel advisor comes in.
Would I Sail Windstar Again?
Absolutely. ⛵️💙
My Bella Italia: A Southern Italian Romance journey from Rome to Venice reminded me why I love small-ship cruising.
It’s intimate.
It’s relaxed.
It’s destination-focused.
And it allows you to experience Italy in a way that feels less like checking destinations off a list and more like living the journey.
For travelers who want something beyond the traditional cruise experience—especially those who appreciate smaller ships, personalized service, unique ports and a more immersive approach to travel—Windstar is a cruise line worth considering.
And now, when I recommend it, I can say something even more valuable:
“I’ve been there. I’ve sailed it. Let me tell you what I think.” 💙
