Paddlewheeler Riverboat Travel – River Cruising

Riverboat travel has a rich history in America, with the development of paddlewheel steamboats playing a pivotal role in revolutionizing transportation and commerce on the nation’s waterways. With American Cruise Lines you can experience the grandeur of the past while enjoying the comforts of the present as you explore a variety of river cruise itineraries.

Until the early 1800s, before the invention of the steam engine, river transportation in America was slow and laborious. A group of visionary inventors persevered to develop vessels powered by steam engines and transformed transportation.

In 1787 John Fitch unveiled his remarkable creation—a steamboat capable of carrying passengers and cargo. The vast system of American rivers was developing into pathways of opportunity. Fitch’s steamboats unfortunately had mechanical and financial failures and his brilliance remained unappreciated during his lifetime. In the two decades following Fitch’s first steamboat, a parade of other inventors made their attempts with vessels that functioned, but lacked reliability.

In 1807 an engineering and business team came along that ignited the steamboat revolution: Robert Fulton, Robert Livingston, and Nicholas Roosevelt. Fulton launched the North River steamboat – later nicknamed the Clermont after Livingston’s family estate along the North River (today’s Hudson River). Its first voyage between New York City and Albany reduced a weeks-long journey to mere days. The vessel’s reliability led to busy loads of cargo and passengers and vast profits. By 1811, partner Nicholas Roosevelt constructed the first steamboat west of the Appalachian Mountains at Pittsburgh and debuted mechanical transportation with an epic 2,200-mile journey down the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers. Steamboats quickly became the lifeblood of commerce along the vast network of rivers of America and dramatically impacted the economy and migration that empowered the nation’s westward expansion.
