As the days grow shorter and temperatures cooler, trees prepare for the approaching winter by gradually halting the production of chlorophyll, the pigment responsible for the green color of leaves. As chlorophyll production wanes, other pigments present in the leaves, such as carotenoids and anthocyanins, become more prominent. Carotenoids produce vibrant yellows and oranges, while anthocyanins give rise to stunning reds, purples, and blues.
