I hear that a lot of people are making travel plans for the April 8, 2024 total eclipse of the sun. Some places are already sold out. A number of U.S. cities lie in or near the eclipse’s track – including Austin, Dallas and Indianapolis – but you’ll find the best weather prospect’s south of the border in Mexico.
Meterologists’ predict that your odds of cloud-free viewing will be much better in Mexico than in the U.S. The 124-mile-wide shadow should touch down at Mazatlan, where there will be 4 minutes and 17 seconds of totality while the moon covers the sun. As the shadow travels towards Texas, the charming town of Copala, 44 miles inland, will offer an elevated position of viewing the approaching shadow. Other cities in Mexico inside the path of totality include Durango and Torreon, but chances for cloudy skies will increase as the shadow races northeast.
You also might consider booking a cruise. Ship captains can often maneuver into an area offering unobstructed viewing. Both Princess Cruises and Holland America Line have adjusted Mexico, Panama Canal, and Hawaii itineraries for 5 ships.
